‘Silent House’ is just good enough in most respects. This remake of a 2010 thriller from Uruguay benefits from a bold treatment by directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau (Open Water); mainly, a faux “one extended take” approach that largely succeeds in prolonging a feeling of escalating suspense and dread.

Elizabeth Olsen gives a committed and emotional performance that anchors the film throughout it’s 88 minute running time, even when faced with a conclusion that may feel a bit silly and pat.

I actually would have preferred a complete absence of explanation at the film’s conclusion; that ambiguity would have allowed the film to live in your mind as more of an experience than an experiment.
